Buying an 18 Wheeler From an Individual 

Consider this..... You see all the trash on the ground in different places that people work right?  You say what does that have to do with buying a truck.

Well it shows how trifling some people are.  If they will throw trash out on the ground, that mindset will likely allow them to be a slacker when it comes to maintaining their truck or at the least, be willing to sell it to you with problems.

Here are things I always ask when buying a used truck from an individual.

• Can I test drive it on the interstate (and I drive 10 miles)
• Can I get my mechanic to inspect it
• Can I get a DINO done on it
• Why are you getting rid of it
• Do you have the maintenance records
• How many owners were there before you
• Has it had a top end or bottom end done

Now I've actually never gotten a DYNO done.   But I act like I'm going to do it to see how they react about it.

I've only had a mechanic check it out first 2 out of 3 times.  Once on site and the other time I drove the truck to the shop.

I like finding guy with trucks who are getting rid of it because they are leaving the business.  If he is buying another truck it could be something wrong with that one.  If he is getting out of trucking it's not a green light because it could mean there is something serious wrong and he/she is deciding to get out rather than fix it.

But for something that would cost enough to make that decision for him, you'll likely discover the problem.

If you can talk him/her into allowing you to put a down payment and make payments, it's a very good chance it's nothing wrong with the truck that he/she knows of.  You still can just pay him/her off though.

Keep in mind though with this route you will likely have no warranty unless there is a remainder on it from the dealership.

Buying Used From Dealership

• You might have warranty
• Their reputation is there to tarnish.   Hopefully the care about that
• You can read reviews
• Truck might qualify for after market warranties as well.
• Con:  You will pay more than if you buy it from an individual.
