Trucking Life Has No Age Limit
by: The Crazy Trucker

You're not too old to get into trucking. At 46 or older you do want to be very deliberate.

Have goals and depending on what your situation is make sure you are able to transition out when you want to.

A factor that will override your age is your state of health. If you're healthy and mentally stable and not on meds that will affect your judgement life as a trucker for you is not off the table.

Is trucking a good choice?

Well that is not a simple response. There is a lot to consider and this page covers that.
Should I become a trucker

The others aspect of that question though is trucking still a good career choice?

My short answer is yes. Drivers are not about to be replaced and just because you start now, it doesn't mean you are stuck here.

Advice from an old man NEW
by: Anonymous

What is at home ? Wife/kids ? Know that if you're out on the road you WILL get that call saying the water heater busted and the basement is flooded, the car broke down, etc. Usually on the 2nd day of a 2 week trip. Know also that you will be missing a lot of soccer games, birthday s, anniversaries, etc. You won t be there to take your kid to the emergency room cause he fell off the swing and broke his arm.(these all happened to me btw,).
But it can be a rewarding , interesting career. Every day is different. You'll see spectacular things. Not just scenery but how about a pronghorn antelope racing along the shoulder of the highway with you praying he doesn't cut left in front of you. Or a flock of hundreds of geese struggling against high winds to maintain their v formations.
Try it for a couple years . If you have a young family after a couple years start looking for local driving jobs.

Never to Old NEW
by: Spitfire

Of course my husband (Bobairian) started driving at 16 years old ( when he started the rules were different)and finally gave up the road at 78. Yes I said "78" ! I was with him living on the truck for 30 of those years as a "professional seat cover". We loved every minute of going long haul and when he quit he still had job offers . My only comment for you is to keep your record clean, keep your distance from others and enjoy the scenery. You are not to old.. My husband was only sick 6 days before he passed at 83. I still have the itch to be on a truck every time I see one it is a wonderful career.

Yes, it's a good career choice. You have plenty of time to set up a good pension plan through a trucking company.

Is 46 too old for trucking? NEW

Many drivers retire from some job in their 60's & 70's then start a new career in trucking. There's no age discrimination in trucking.

There are people getting into trucking at 50
by: Hervy

No age is too old as long as you can pass the DOT physical. These days trucking companies are pretty tolerant as well.

If you have a good driving and criminal record and are in good health you can likely get a trucking job. You age at 46 definitely won't hold you back.
