New to this life and looking for some advice

I have reconnected with my high school sweetheart after being apart for 20 years and guess what?! He's a trucker and has been for about 12 years. Not only that but his home base is 5 1/2 hours from where I live, so not only are we dealing with the OTR factor but a long distance relationship also.

It helps that my best friend (also from high school) is a trucker and I have his wife to inbox and get support from. I guess my question is....how the heck to do this?

So far what I read is stay busy, well I'm the single mom of three kids, I work and go to school,so I'm pretty busy, it's learning how to handle only seeing him one weekend a month.

Any suggestions on how to handle the loneliness and what to expect from him during his home time and how I can make his home time enjoyable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Technology is a trucking couples friend NEW
by: Hervy

Mia, like Bill said having a goal of transitioning from Over the road might be something that you two consider as a goal for the future.

As for now, technology is your friend. If you are not familiar Skype is good for free video chat.

Communication will be one of the biggest things that you can do to address those types of feelings.

Also if you kept like a map or something to track where he calls from it could be a way to feel more connected to him while he is on the road.

It also could serve as a learning tool to get the kids to pay more attention to the geography of the US.

Well, that's all I got.

You Need a change, Mia NEW
by: Bill

Mia, When I came home from OTR, my wife and dogs met me at the door one time and said: "Who are you?" I knew then that I needed a change to regional, dedicated, line haul, own authority, etc. There are other trucking jobs than OTR. OTR is really a great job for the young guys with no family that they need to be around.

Since you have kids, you can not go traveling with him unless you get a baby sitter. But that would be another solution. Get your own CDL and be a team if you like living in the the tight quarters of a truck. My gal and dogs went from NE to FL with me and loved it being up high above traffic looking all around, staying at clean truck stops.

Good luck. It's not easy.
