Is it hard on family life?

I've wanted to be a trucker since about grade 3. I keep going trucking schools and checking them out but that's as far as I get.
The main reasons is the cost and my family. I figure if it's something I don't like then it's one expensive mistake. I heard it can be tough on family too. If you have the time, I wouldn't mind some detailed answers about how the trucking life is for you.
