Can Truckers Work Part Time

Can truckers work part time? The short answer is yes!

Here's the thing. You won't likely start your trucking career working part time as a truck driver.

You'll never get good at it like that. Most smart trucking companies want drivers who are skilled at driving and experienced with the logistics and expectations of a career in trucking. Because trucking is so unpredictable and nuanced.

However..... If you are willing to get your CDL and drive for at least one year depending on where you live or are willing to reside you can drive part time.

At that point it comes down to how much money you need to earn per month.

One of the best ways to drive part time is to work a week or two on then 2 or 3 days to a week off. However, there are few trucking companies that will accommodate such a request.

And of course, when you find one don't expect to make more than a regular 9 to 5 job.

That said a better way to work your way to trucking part time is to become an owner operator. Or drive for an owner operator.

If you buy your truck and trailer and get your authority after saving up about 2 months expenses plus an nest egg of $30,000 dollars for emergencies you can comfortably work part time.

For example you might work Spring Summer and Fall and take the winter off.

Or you might work 2 weeks and take a week off.

Point being you can make enough quick enough so that if you save it for rainy days or non working days, you can still maintain your way of living while
trucking part time.

After you get trucking experience there are truck driving staffing companies just like there are staffing companies for other job titles.

You have Transforce and Trillium for example.
