Women in Trucking Have Come a Long Way – And Men Hold the Keys to Going Further

by TRUCKERS VA
(UNITED STATES)

Intro – From Just “Riding Along” to Driving Change

Not long ago, a woman in a semi was either a rare sight or riding shotgun. Now? She might be the one shifting gears, managing the fleet, training new drivers — or running the whole operation.

The trucking industry is changing, and women are taking the wheel in more ways than one. But here’s the kicker: they shouldn't have to do it alone.

If we really want to accelerate progress, it’s time for more men to hop in the passenger seat — not to control the route, but to support, uplift, and clear the path.

🚚 Women Are Gaining Ground in Trucking

According to the Women In Trucking Association’s 2025 Index, women now make up:

9.5% of professional drivers

34.5% of supervisors and mid-managers

28% of C-suite execs across the industry

That’s progress worth celebrating — but we’re not at the finish line.

Let’s be real: half the U.S. population is female. And yet, they make up less than 1 in 10 truck drivers. There’s still plenty of road ahead.

Why This Isn’t Just a “Women’s Issue”

• The driver shortage is crushing – Every carrier is desperate for reliable drivers. So why overlook an entire segment of capable talent?

• Safety stats don’t lie – Studies show women drivers tend to have fewer accidents and violations. That’s good for everyone’s bottom line.

• Better culture = less turnover – Companies that welcome women and build inclusive environments see higher retention across the board — not just with women.

• It’s about your daughters, nieces, wives, and sisters – Would you want the women in your life to feel unsafe or unwelcome in a profession that feeds families and moves America?

What’s Still Holding Women Back

Facilities & safety – Clean bathrooms, secure parking, and safe rest stops aren’t optional — they’re basic needs.

Outdated mindsets – “Can she handle it?” “Isn’t this a man’s job?” That thinking belongs in the junkyard.

Lack of visible mentors – It’s tough to be what you can’t see. More female role models = more new entrants.

The solo-life struggle – Long-haul life is
hard enough; for women, isolation adds a different level of risk and emotional toll.

So… What Can Men Do to Help?

Here’s how to be a part of the movement without making it weird:

✅ Mentor a female driver – Share the ropes, not just the routes. Your guidance might be the reason she sticks with it.

✅ Speak up in the locker room – If a joke or comment crosses the line, call it out. Culture shifts when men enforce respect.

✅ Recruit like you mean it – If you’re hiring, don’t assume the next great driver is a guy. Use inclusive language and visuals.

✅ Push for better policies – Ask your company: Are facilities female-friendly? Are safety concerns being addressed? Are we supporting parents?

✅ Celebrate women publicly – Whether it’s a social media shoutout or a driver-of-the-month award, visibility matters.

Voices from the Road

“When I first started driving, I didn’t see another woman for weeks. Now I park next to one almost every night.” – Tonya, 6-year OTR driver

“A guy I trained ended up defending me at a truck stop when someone was being inappropriate. That’s what allyship looks like.” – Mia, team driver

“We hired our first female dispatcher last year. Morale improved across the board — even the men said so.” – Dave, fleet manager

Bottom Line: This Is a Team Effort

Women don’t need special treatment — they need equal treatment. They’ve proven they can handle the job. The question is whether the industry — especially the men in it — will help pave the road ahead.

Let’s be the ones who welcome progress, not resist it. Let’s be the drivers of change — literally and figuratively.

When women succeed in trucking, we all do.
