Roadcheck 2026: More Than 13,500 Trucks and Drivers Put Out of Service

Roadcheck came, inspectors looked, and thousands of trucks and drivers got parked.

If you were hoping the annual CVSA Roadcheck inspection blitz was going to be a quiet little 72-hour paperwork exercise, well... the numbers tell a different story.

According to the latest results from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), inspectors conducted 54,575 inspections across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico during the May 12–14, 2026 Roadcheck campaign.

More than 13,500 out-of-service orders were issued.

That number sounds ugly at first. But here's the part that deserves some attention: most of the trucks and drivers inspected actually passed without an out-of-service violation.

The big number everyone is talking about

Roadcheck resulted in 13,534 out-of-service orders.

• 10,350 were issued to commercial motor vehicles.


• 3,184 were issued to commercial vehicle drivers.

Now here's where the headline needs a little context.

CVSA reported that 81% of vehicles and 94.2% of drivers inspected did not have an out-of-service violation.

So no, this doesn't mean inspectors rolled out and found a parking lot full of unsafe trucks. Most inspected vehicles and drivers made it through without an OOS violation.

But it does show something important: when thousands of inspections are concentrated into a short period, small problems can suddenly become very expensive problems.

Brakes and tires were still a big deal

The top vehicle out-of-service violation was brake systems, with 3,379 violations discovered.

Tires came next with 2,914 violations, followed by 2,072 violations involving 20% defective brakes.

That should get every driver's attention.

Because brakes and tires aren't exactly the kind of equipment you want to discover has a problem when you're coming down a mountain with 40,000 pounds behind you.

Lights accounted for another 1,659 violations, while cargo securement produced 1,724 out-of-service violations.

This year's Roadcheck had two special targets

CVSA specifically focused on cargo securement and ELD tampering during the 2026 campaign.

Inspectors found 1,724 cargo-securement violations and issued 146 out-of-service orders for ELD tampering.

That's worth paying attention to because

it shows where enforcement attention was concentrated.

In other words, if you're thinking, "I'll just make sure my lights work," that's not the whole game. Inspectors are looking at the bigger picture.

Drivers weren't getting a free pass either

The most common driver out-of-service violation was no medical card, with 1,072 violations.

Other major driver violations included:

• Hours of Service: 929 violations


• No CDL: 620 violations


• English proficiency: 361 violations


• False records of duty status: 266 violations

And this is where Roadcheck becomes more than a story about equipment.

A truck can be mechanically perfect and still have a problem if the driver isn't compliant.

What truckers should take from this

The biggest lesson isn't "Roadcheck is out to get truckers."

The better lesson is don't wait for an inspection to discover something you could have caught yourself.

Do your pre-trip. Look at the tires. Check the lights. Pay attention to brakes and securement. Make sure your paperwork and credentials are in order.

And if something doesn't look right, don't convince yourself that it'll probably be fine because you've got another 400 miles to go.

That's how a $20 problem turns into a very expensive afternoon sitting on the side of the road.

The bottom line

Roadcheck 2026 produced a big headline: 13,534 out-of-service orders in just 72 hours.

But the bigger story is that the vast majority of inspected drivers and vehicles did not receive an out-of-service violation.

For professional drivers, that's the takeaway worth remembering. Compliance isn't something you suddenly start caring about when you see flashing lights behind you.

Take care of the truck. Take care of the paperwork. Take care of yourself.

Because the best inspection is the one where the inspector looks at your truck, hands you your paperwork, and says, "Have a safe day."
