Hoover Dam bypass update

(Kingman,Az)

If you run west On I40 through Arizona, as you know, there is a detour around Hoover Dam if your trip takes you through Las Vegas. Since 9/11, no trucks have been allowed over Hoover Dam. You must detour through Laughlin,Nv which adds 25 miles but probably 1 hour time wise. Or you can stay on I40 through Needles,Ca and Pickup U.S.95 West of Needles and proceed north.

The Laughlin detour has a 12 mile, 6% downgrade with 2 escape ramps and a traffic signal at the bottom. Some drivers not familiar get a rude awakening with the 6% grade. D.P.S. say these ramps are used 70 times a year to get trucks stopped. There have been some nasty wrecks in the area, even trucks coming eastbound from Nevada which also has 6%. In '08, a truck went into the river.

The new bypass is expected to be open in Sept/Oct '09. It will be 4 lanes all the way from Exit 48 on I40 to Boulder City, Nv. I have not heard anything about bypassing Boulder City, but you can scoot through there fairly quick. And also a new Loves is expected to open soon at exit 9 on I40 in Lake Havasu City,Az just past the Pilot. Jimmy

Also, FYI, Thermo King repair in W. Kingman, Exit 44, go N. Their sign claims to work on any brand, so I assume they will work on Carrier units.

New Loves, Lake Havasu City,Az
by: Jimmy

New Loves opening at Lake Havasu City, Az. Exit 9, I-40, past the Pilot on right side. Opening approximately April,'09. Along I-40 in Az, there will now be a Pilot and Loves at exit 9, Crazy Freds, exit 44, T/A and USA at exit 48, Flying 'J',exit 53, Loves, exit 59, and Petro, exit 66.

Truck washes available include Blue Beacon, behind Petro, exit 66, An independent truck wash at exit 59 next to Loves, Truck Tub at exit 44 (so frontage rd, E.) and Crazy Freds has a truck wash at exit 44. Crazy Freds is along s.frontage rd, e.

Truck service includes Speedco at exit 66 (n. side) Petro, exit 66, T/A, exit 48, Crazy Freds, exit 44. And there is a Freightliner dealer at exit 53. (turn left at Flying 'J' to enter Freightliner) FYI, Crazy Freds is hit and miss re: truck wash and truck service. Freightliner hours are 2 shifts weekdays and 1 shift weekends. Freightliner also has a small shop in Needles,Ca.

Kingman is a truck friendly town. Wal-Mart Super Center is off exit 51 (Stockton Hill Rd) and go N. Go past Wal-Mart to traffic lite (Airway) and turn R. to next lite to enter. They don't want trucks trying to enter from Stockton Hill Rd. Or you can enter from exit 53, go past Flying 'J' to next lite (Airway) and left to Wal-Mart entrance. Recommended.

There are various motels close to Flying 'J' with truck parking and a Harley Davidson dealer. Caterpillar has a truck shop also. Both Harley and Cat are between exit 51 and 53 on the N. side of I-40 with truck parking.

So if you're driving by and can't stop to say hello, at least wave, we'll wave back. We promise! Jimmy
