Your Trucker Driver's Health

by Ronda
(St. Louis, MO )

Just have been through a month of medical hell..My hubby was home for a few weeks hadn't been feeling that well-he has high blood pressure, doesn't eat healthy and a has a job that doesn't give him much exercise.

My advice as a Truck Driver's Wife...LISTEN to them and their bodies....they need to watch what they eat low sodium stuff, good stuff-fruits veggies etc stuff we all know but with their live style its so hard.

Watch for swelling in feet and legs and cut the smokes out! Its tough but even their sleep habits need to be as normal as possible. When you are working so hard pushing yourself hard to make money in this economy today -its not risking your life.

Monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and diet....its so important it will turn a young man -or woman old quick.

I wish truck stops would put in treadmills instead of buffets..at least walking moving around getting your blood pumping would help.

Things aren't over for us -we will make it over this hump and get him back to normal. But it was a big eye opener!

Scary stuff I love my husband and sometime getting the freight moved isn't so important! Praying for him all the time to get better!Take care of yourselves -its so important!

Thanks for the ideas
by: Ronda

My hubby is doing a little better. Its just such a difficult life style. "NON" truckers families don't really get how difficult of a job it is. Drivers have responsiblities that go beyond just driving down the road -you have to watch out for everyone -pulling 80,000lbs isn't as easy as some may think. They have to be safe and always watch out for the "four" wheelers out there...I know it was an eye opener going on the road with him -it made me a better driver -truckers can't just stop on a dime or pull over too quickly. Stress is all over the highways..and taking care of yourself helps you deal with that. Its hard for professional drivers -I am just saying it can make a young person age quickly and taking care of your health as a driver needs to be a priority! Thanks for the nice comments and concerns I love being able to "vent" to people who truely understand! Be safe everyone and take care of yourselves!

Truckers diets
by: DZRTJUL

The truckers diets can be quit bad, to say the least. I have tried to teach mine to cook his own food on the road. It not only saves money but is so much better for him. He drives with a portable gas stove. I also make homemade beef jerky, which is a great on the road snack, and is very costly at a truck stops. Sending him off with granola granola bars, dried fruit works as well. Peanut butter is not a bad choice either.

Truckers Health

Thanks for posting this Rhonda. Your are right it is a very serious issue.

Hope everything turns out OK.

We do need to take better care of ourselves. There is a lot of junk food available and there is a lack of equipment.

However, we can choose to do some things to make up for those issues. We can take our own food and we can walk around the lot or do other exercises without equipment.

Here are some more ideas.
