The Truth NEW
by: Queenie

Horrible mentoring (so-called mentors break company policies & even laws while still keeping their job w/May, threaten ELDs over rolling the window down due to the mentor passing gas & finding it cute & funny, urinate in cups, never shower, play with their nipple rings in front of you while driving, text and use phone while driving, go off the road several times getting intimate with the "rumple strip"). I only had 2 good days of mentoring w/one of the amazing ladies that work there after my horrible experience of not learning anything on the crazy train with my so-called mentor. I'd stay the night w/a friend in the area & was assumed to be "falsifying logs." I got terminated w/o warning even after I started getting things down and was being on time (if not early), and doing everything right. They give you incorrect directions and wonder why you get pissed or end up late even when planning to be ahead schedule...which I recommend getting a trucking GPS A.S.A.P... due to this major discrepancy. They (one particular person) treats blacks differently & talks down to them. They expect everyone to learn at the same speed and the same way (1-size-fits-all). They put you on 48 or 11 western states when you chose to be on one of the regionals & even then, it's the incorrect regional...having to clarify multiple times, so you don't keep getting put on something you didn't sign up for (then they say, "you can't keep refusing loads"). Oh yeah, not to mention they send you to another state to get your truck (which saves them having to recover it themselves) and that's IF you can even get INTO your truck and once you do, IF it'll even start! Although they do offer a lot of good things, there are too many problems with their equipment (tractor and trailers), they lack consistency, integrity, and justice. I hardly call "spending 2 days of mentoring (although a wonderful mentor) and having a truck for less than 3 weeks (during that time having it in shop multiple times) and sending the new driver out expecting them to get everything correct and then firing them" giving someone a real chance. Yet, their are lousy mentors who could give 2 craps about company policies and/or laws (safety laws included) who still keep their position w/May that have been w/the company for YEARS. Lol. I know this isn't positive, but I aint never been one to lie, or keep something that needs to be known back. I've always been one to tell it like it is...I have been and always will be a person of integrity and dignity. People have a right to know the truth. The Driver Development peeps (Sunny, Carol, and Steve...others, too, I'm sure) are amazing and go above & beyond to help whenever they can. Dispatch and DMs (most of them) are caring, PATIENT, and extremely helpful, too. Marcy, I'll not forget you. You're the bestest! The majority of the drivers also become like brothers/sisters to you and look out for ya...especially if you're a female...I'll miss yall. I wish I could give a different rating and feedback for each individual department or person, but, as they say, "You represent the whole company."

Bobtailing home NEW

Hi everyone, I'm considering signing on with May, but the recruiter couldn't guarantee that I could bring my truck home. Which would be a huge issue for me, as my little truck needs to stay home to be used for farm work. Can anyone tell me if they let drivers take their truck home?

Thanks

crappy job NEW
by: Anonymous

If you're too lame to get a good trucking job, May is probably a good place for you to work. The hourly pay rate for under 100 mile runs is currently $12.50hr. Lucky if you get this, though, you have to jump through hoops like submitting a "request" for pay to DM. Sloppy DM means no pay. And many DM's are brand new trainee, bad attitude youngsters that aren't competent or intelligent. Detention pay is the same, after 4 hours. Yep, 4 hrs. The fuel routing system for 11 western drivers (california) wastes hours of time each week because they have you stop at the very busiest (cheapest price) truck stops to pump as little as 25 gallons of fuel. Seriously, this is a daily thing for May drivers in California specially. I actually ran their truck out of DEF a couple times because they simply wouldn't open up a fuel stop for it even though I requested it over and over. I bought the DEF myself and started carrying a bottle with me. I've been charged for Idling in LA when it was 105 degrees because I didn't "format" my request properly, and rather than tell me this at the time, they simply charged me and ignored my messages regarding the idle time. That's a jerk way of treating a new employee that's not used to strange policies like that idle charge thing. Several times a month I had loads put on the truck that had appointment times 15-17 hours after my 14 hr had been started for the day and I was still under another dispatch and rolling. I quit a very good company that payed twice as much because I got tired of that sort of thing and hoped May was 100% legitimate. Or at least -mostly- legitimate. Oops, stupid me, glad the other guys will hire me back, though! 75mph trucks, btail anywhere i want, park at home without asking, idle without any flack or charges, route myself how I want, etc...
Working for May trucking was about as fun as stepping in dog poop with bare feet. As for the guys that like it there, it takes all kinds, glad you like it and are content being poor and being used and abused by morons. I'll be that guy flying past you at 80mph in Utah, I'll wave and be nice, even though you're in my way, slow poke.

Absolutely Amazing Company NEW
by: Trevor Curtis

I have been at May for right at a year. It's my first company I've ever driven for and cannot say enough good things about it. My DM out of Denver, Tina, is the most amazing person. She is extremely helpful and is always bending over backwards for me when I need help. She doesn't have to do everything she does, but does it because she really does care. If you run into a negative person at May, it's probably because your attitude and approach is ridiculous and of course no one wants to deal with crappy attitudes. Is this company perfect? No. I would definitely say without a shadow of a doubt that their good ultimately outweighs the bad. If you work hard and do what you're supposed to and don't cause extra problems, they will get issues resolved asap. I'm highly recommending this company, especially to new drivers in the industry. Keep your eta/pta up to date and they WILL keep you rolling and making money. They have a flat pay option that really enables a new driver to learn the ropes and get into a routine that sets you up for success without worrying about getting paid. No one makes great money anywhere in this industry when they just start out. There's a lot to learn, but knowing you'll be getting something no matter what really helps in the beginning, especially because this industry has enough stress involved with it. I can't believe some of the extremely ignorant negative comments on here, especially from wives that have no idea how the company operates. There's a reason May has been successful for 70 years. Trucking is a tough business, so do your research. It's not for everyone, especially crybabies and complainers. God bless

Great equipment, treated well NEW
by: Anonymous

An understanding of the trucking business helps when considering comments. When all is said and done, for the most part all OTR companies are competing for the same freight, Yes, there are contracts; but routing spends their time finding loads. How about spending a little time getting to know the people that are routing?

If you are four hours out from a drop, let them know. My experience was that I always had a new load waiting for me when I was done with the current one. Unloaded in New Jersey at 10:00 am, under a new load at noon. Why? Because the routers knew what I was doing.

I understand the governors from a safety and fuel perspective, but 61 mph across Wyoming?

Very nice equipment, treated well.

May Lease purchase NEW
by: Bob

I started with May as a company driver in 2004. I noticed quite a few of the black freightliners, former company trucks. I asked the owner/operators driving these trucks if they were able to pay off their trucks. I got pretty much the same answer from all of them. Yes their trucks were paid off, they were free to go haul anywhere they choose and chose to stay with May.
After 6 months as a company driver I signed a lease purchase for a Century. I completed the lease and the purchase on time. I mentioned to a couple of drivers that I was interested in a newer truck. One of the fleet owners approached me and bought my truck for cash. I had no truck! My driver manager asked if I wanted to drive a company truck until I picked out another truck. I said yes and was given a Peterbilt 379 EXHD to drive. I drove it for seven months. I was given the option to lease purchase it. I was so tempted but decided to get another Century for the condo sleeper and better mpg. I completed the lease purchase on the second truck as well. I would still be hauling for May but developed severe night blindness. I sold that truck too. Both times I got clear title in my name. There was never any doubt in my mind that I would be successful. I can say without reservation that May Trucking is fair and honest in their business dealings.

Blah, blah, blah....waa, waa, waa. Complaining people, get a Waamburger and some french cries. You are obviously one of the following: Lazy, Inept, or dont quite get how your ETA;PTA is supposed to work. Are you an Adult? Or a Child? Cause really only children cry about life when shit doesnt go their way. Suck it up and do your JOB. No other job entails less than a month of school for the money you make....even the flat pay by day (which is kick ass as far as I'm concerned). Mcdonalds is always hiring for 10 bucks an hour. Or you can break your back doing some hot, labor intensive job. This is a cake walk and you know it. Be kind to your DM, they are YOUR voice to the company. All else, Be Safe. Your families and the families of everyone you pass daily thank you whether they know it or not.

Corrupt NEW
by: Anonymous

The first few months on the job with May Trucking my DM calls me to ask me to deliver a load while logged off duty. I did not have the hours to deliver that day and Mays solution to the problem was have me as a driver coast around the dock yard logged off duty and deliver. After eight months with the company they still tell me to get live loaded with an hour left on my clocks. The only way to accomplish such a task without getting an HOS violation is to remained logged onto sleeper berth the entire time at the shippers, including your time spent getting paperwork at the shipping office. They consistently put their drivers in positions that jeopardize their license. At the same time, driver managers send out mass messages through the qualcom reminding us to manage our hours and avoid HOS violations. Absolute hypocrites.

This is an excellent company to work for. Any comments made by an anonymous are worthless as far as I'm concerned. My name is A Aaron Dennis, I stand behind May 100%. Best entry level program and starting pay bar none. Great equipment, well maintained fleet and great staff. Large enough to keep you busy yet small enough to treat you like a person and with respect. I am a trainer for May and have been for 10yrs. I luv May, my father drove for and retired from May, a bro-in-law drove for May, many of the logistics and support staff are married to drivers or are ex-drivers themselves with other family members working for May also. For those who want to get started driving go for it and call May. For those who have drove for May and choose to complain about their isolated issues u should really think before u speak or type. DM'S have no control over the load u get, how long u sit at customers, the weather u drive thru or any other variables. People always want to blame the DM (driver manager) for things they have nothing to do with, or in a lot of cases for their own personal success as an otr driver. May is a great company if u keep an open mind to the fact that all trucking companies have flaws like people. Finding a company u can drive for for a long time is like getting married it's finding who's shit you can tolerate and still stand by happily. If yer looking to become a driver interview the company as much or more than they interview u, do research, ask questions if you have the chance see what kind of cars are parked at the yards that's a good indicator of success. Happy Hunting and good luck.

My Experince so Far NEW
by: Anonymous

OK OK what in the world peeps, what terminals were y'all out of? I have been working for two months with May and I have very few complaints. If I have a problem I call my DM and he helps the best he can. I have never met anyone in management has ever been rude to me unless I didn't follow a company guideline, example "raw hiding the truck". Other than a few crap policies, mainly idle time and the 61mph governed speed,I have no complaints. Also as for sitting, I hardly ever sit and most time I have a load before I even offload the last. And as far as waiting to be offloaded that is the consignees bs not Mays, you cannot control the shippers and receivers.Oh I forgot the longest time I had to sit was two weeks waiting for my truck to repaired at a Pete dealership, but hey I got another truck with less miles so no biggie. To me this is a great company for a rookie to get his or her feet wet.

Really? NEW
by: Anonymous

You all realize that the DM's are not the ones making the drivers sit right? Yes I do know there are quite a few rude ones but they are not the ones planning their loads. I agree with a lot of the comments. The thing I don't agree with is if you don't know what your talking about. Don't complain. I'm amazed how drivers go through company orientations and still complain. I know that May is upfront with their drivers from moment one. If you went through their orientation and then got on a truck and started complaining, then that is on the driver, not the company. The trucking industry is very tough. It is hard on drivers, it is hard on families. Not everyone can make it happen. If you are unhappy, no matter what job you are in then you need to start re-evaluating if that job is really for you or your family. It is tough out there. My family is going through it too. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do to get us where we want to be. With all that said, thank you to the drivers, not just May's but all drivers. I give you kudos and a lot of respect for the job you do out there.

I currently am employed with May. I am looking for a new job because this company doesn't care for the drivers. The pay is ridiculous. I've been driving for 12 years and have never dealt with dm' s with no compassion or concern for me. I've been sitting for almost 4 days now and have had it. When the trucks not rolling I'm not making money. I've been thru a few dm' s now and the last one tried to make me roll illegally. He blamed me cause I wouldn't haul an over loaded load. Is that respect?!! No, its not. Over all the moneys not here, dispatch is awful, and trucks should be better equipped for drivers. You better make sure you send in a message about idling or you'll be charged for fuel you burn. On a 1-10 scale, I too say a big 0!!

To start off with I have noticed that everyone that is complaining about May are illiterate, that means you can not read, write, mainly spell. That tells me alot about where the message is coming from, ideots. There are Pros and Cons to working for May but it is that way where ever you go to work.if you do not like working at May go work someplace else. I have been working here for just under a year and I have only been late delivering a load twice. Both times were my fault but I never got in trouble. If I am give a load that can not make the delivery time I accept the load but in the comments you write that load can not be delivered on time and you communicate that with your DM. If you break down you communicate that with your DM and Breakdown. They will and should take care of you. If they do not talk to their boss and it will be taken care of. I have a great DM that takes care of me. Had a friend that had a bad DM and they just keept track of all communication between the two of them and ended up getting a new DM. DM's are held accountable also the driver just needs to Speke up. But something tells me that those of you complaining on websites like this are doing so because their problem with May is really themselfs. You have pore time management skills and would rather complaine than do a hard days work. Not that setting behind a steering wheel is that hard to do, pre trips, swap trailors, 8-11 hours of driving a day, sleep 10 hours, do it all again, 70 hours of work in a 8 day period. What is hard about that? Just do your job and you would not have any problems. With that said the job is what you make of it and if you can not do your job, then yes you will have problems.

My Husband has just become employed by May Trucking. Reading the above comment about office staff and DM's being idiots and rude is far from what he has told me. I read this comment to him over the cell phone and he said he has not met one person from the start who has been rude. They are very helpful and considerate and want to work with him to help in any way they can. He was with a trainer for over 3 weeks and he was extremely helpful and even when the wheels were not turning , spent most his time explaining many in's and out's of May Trucking, rule, safety and operations. Makes me wonder what some of these people are smoking! First and foremost.. "Attitude is everything!

I am a mom a wife and a person, since my husband started working for May, I feel like I have become single without benefits. Thank you to my husbands driver manager for all the hours my husband has SAT waiting for a load, Thank you to my husbands driver manager for all the hours he has waited to get off loaded. I think if the driver managers only got paid if their drivers wheels were moving, they would be more motivated. Sit at your desk eat your snacks, lick your fingers and then go home to your family, if they have not already left you for being an idiot. I have read all about May Trucking online and spoke with several people that have worked for them. You hear the bad and you hear the good and you weigh them out. In everything I have read I do not believe this is how May Trucking is, I think they have a few bad seeds in places they should not be. I am a manager with the company I work for and yes I would believe what a DM said over a driver, why would I ever suspect my DM was not telling the truth. So my advise now to my husband is, over document Qualcom(sp) conversations. Make yourself clear as to what you are saying your DM said to you and clear what your response was back to him.
The society we are raising is zero accountability I say MAY TRUCKING let's hold that DM accountable for a change. Fat and sassy killed the car industry, now the sale people have to work to sale a car. The DM needs to have a pay scale check.

MY HUSBAND AND I CURRENTLY WORK FOR MAY TRUCKING. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED WORSE THAN WE HAVE BEEN AT MAY TRUCKING. MAY TRUCKING'S OFFICE STAFF DOESN'T LISTEN TO THEIR DRIVER'S, THEY WILL NOT ADMIT WHEN THEY ARE WRONG AND THEY HAVE ALWAYS POINTED THE FINGER AT AT THE DRIVER WHEN THEY HAVE MADE A MISTAKE. THEIR OFFICE STAFF FROM THE HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER TO THE SUPERVISOR OF THE DISPATCH DEPARTMENT IS CORRUPT. IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT WORKING FOR MAY TRUCKING COMPANY, PLEASE THINK AGAIN! THEIR OFFICE STAFF IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL, RUDE AND CONDICENDING TOWARD EVERY ONE OF THEIR DRIVERS. ON A 1 TO 10 SCALE, WE WOULD RATE THEM AS A BIG FAT 0!!!!
