How much money can I really make trucking?

by Capt. Dave Harman
(Alaska)

Hello my name is Dave Harman i am a commercial fishing captain in Alaska. I am interested in Selling my boat and retiring from commercial fishing the Bering Sea after 12 years I am only thirty one but it's time for a change. I want to work as a trucker for 8 months a year. Can I realisticly make 50.000 dollars as an owner operator. I appreciate any honest answer. And for a little help I might be able to slide some fresh fish Halibut or Salmon your way. That is not a lie. Thanks

owner/operator salary

I know you've said that there are a lot of variables with owner/operator salary, however, could you estimate how much a team (a couple) owner/operator driving flatbed basically from coast to coast would make, especially with gas prices the way they are. (would the salary be total, for the team, or per person?) How much would that translate into month-to-month, in case the couple would want to take off work for a month? Thanks!

How much money can I expect to earn as a new trucker?

by Glenn

I appreciate all of the info. you share with potentially, future driver's. It really gives me good insight as to whether or not I know this career is for me! One question I have surrounds the accuracy of a new company driver. Not trying to be naive, but a lot of the companies indicated high 30's to low 40's to begin.

I'm trying to understand how you estimate 24K to begin? Also, the overall selection of a company has presented some challenges for me. They seem to all offer (promise) the same but what truly interests me is consistent freight (2500+ miles per week), attractive benefits package, with hopes of becoming a company driver?

I'm not too concerned about home time since I am not married nor do I have any children. I believe the lifestyle of a trucker is suitable to my current situation.

Thanks again for your website,
