If im at home on home time and I choose to quit a trucking company, and I don't have a trailer,do I have to go pick up a load to take back to a terminal or drop yard or can I just drive the tractor to a terminal or drop yard for them to keep from getting a abandonment charge????

Don't take it upon yourself

If you are giving permission you can deadhead. Get proof of those instructions.

I doubt you will be given permission to deadhead to the terminal unless you stay very close.

If they want you to pick up a load to get it back to the terminal, that is what you want to do to avoid the drama. If you take it to their terminal, I don't know if you will get abandonment but it is possible that they won't pay you the entire last check.

Plus there is not telling what they will put on your DAC.

Avoiding an Abandonment Charge
by: Hervy

Darrell, I don't know what the law states on this. However, in my best judgment, in order to avoid an abandonment charge (or unnecessary drama otherwise) you should consult with your dispatcher and get permission to drop the truck off at the terminal.

You can't just take it upon yourself to drop it off and say come and get your truck. I have talked to guys who have gotten a charge for that.

Like I said don't know the legal standing on the issue maybe someone else has more insight.
