Lookin for a fridge for the big truck

by NickV
(San Antonio, TX)

Ok yall im lookin into buying a fridge for my truck and cant figure out one to buy. I had a 40qt. coleman picked out and was shopping around for the best price and then I went on Gandermountain.com and one trucker said that he had bought 4 of them over the years and the cigarette lighter gets hot and melts so I dont know if he is getting them replaced or buying new ones cause its such a good fridge. Lookin for some advice if yall have any on where I can look for a fridge for less than 150 if possible. This truck stop eating has got to stop and I figure spending the money on a fridge would pay for itself in a month if not less. Thanks for the info ahead of time.

Refridgerator NEW
by: Jack G

If you are a OTR then you really need to spend the money and get an RV/compressor type refridgerator/freezer. Buying some $95.00 Thermetic cooler is great for going to Disneyland for the day but not 24/7 trucking over the road. If you drive local and go home every day then the Thermetic type are fine but if you go out for 2-4 weeks at a time then get the right equipment for the job.

Best truck fridge NEW

Best replacement fridge is. Truck fridge , out of Georgetown Ky. They are real refrigerators. And have models to fit most trucks. They run on dc power, and convert to AC automatically. Also has freezer on top. Heavy duty for big trucks. Cost about $550.00. But worth it. !!!

Your budget is quite too low the specs and durability is also limited . Try to invest higher than your budget because the quality and durable could satisfy your needs. Remember "Higher prices generally mean better quality since quality doesn’t come cheap."

STOP THROWING MONEY AWAY NEW
by: Cherokee Outlaw

To all my trucking brothers...if you currently use or are interested in using the Coleman Powerchill 40qt Thermoelectric Cooler, I have a money saving tip for you. Don't listen to ANYONE that tells you that you have to replace the whole cooler if one fan or the other goes out. IT'S NOT TRUE. I have been using the SAME cooler for going on 3 years now. It runs 24/7 unless the LVD on the truck turns it off which rarely happens. How have I done it? I replaced BOTH fans on the unit as soon as I got it. The exterior fan is a 92mm case fan and you can get a premium dual ball bearing for around $5. The interior fan CAN ALSO BE REPLACED and is a 60mm CPU fan and you can get a sleeve bearing one that it moisture resistant for around $4. Both can be purchased anywhere that sells computer parts. I have also chosen to leave the covers off of both fans. This morning it is 60*F outside and my cooler is a cool 39.4*F. I bought one of those outside/inside thermometer/clock things from Pilot.

truck fridge info
by: Anonymous

I just bought another "COLEMAN POWERCHILL" in the camping/sporting goods section at my local wal-mart $79.99+tax. Two things to remember about these things,1 they are designed to be used about 6 or 8 hours a "WEEK" not 24/7. I take mine out of the box and plug it in and leave it pluged in 24/7 and run it til it dies, they usually live about a year or so. 2 they are NOT refridgerators they are coolers. All they will do is drop the temp.about 40 deg. IE.if its 100 deg inside your truck the stuff inside the cooler will be 60 deg.

Finally got one
by: NickV

Well after alot of research and reading reviews I finally decided on one. Also purchased a 10 dollar warranty from T/A that lasts 2 years. I finally went with a Koolatron 45qt. Like I have said before my wonderful fiance works at the local T/A and she is the one to thank for all the info. She asked truckers, checked prices, and pretty much did everything for me (not to mention the nice percentage off for working there...wink wink). If anyone is looking into buying a fridge she heard ALOT of bad things about the Coleman they have in the truck stops. Think they said it has plastic bearings and the fans go out constantly. Now if your one that doesnt mind your food going bad til you can get your fridge into a stop to replace it then ok but I on the other hand am trying to save money, not waste it. It was a little more pricey but how can you put a price on bringing eating in truckstops to an end. Next thing on my list is an inverter. I have one right now but its only 550 and im hoping it will run my tv and playstation at the same time, we'll see. Oh and even better news I just recieved, the second co driver i had that I actually kinda got along with found a new job while home so guess what...gotta find another one. Yesh, I hate team driving. Just gotta get this year behind me and then see ya later CRST. Well I hope everything is going good with all you guys and hope to see ya out there one day. Take it easy and keep the greasy side down

Saving Money Over the Road
by: Hervy

Whats good Nick, your right that fridge will pay for itself. I had 1 for 2 years with not problems until it finally blew a fuse. Had another one that the motor burnt out in the color after 2 years. Since then I never even used cooler just been buying fruits and veggies in the can with no preservatives.

But the cheapest way to get one is to use your accumulated points in the truckstop or buy one from a driver who bought one that way. If you can't wait for that to happen you know the spot....
Walmart. But you might want to compare the price to 12 volt refrigerators they are usually pretty close or cheaper.

Happy trucking and shoping
