Should We Become Owner Operators

by Hat
(Oregon)

Hubby has been OTR company man 4 years, a student trainer 1 year. He is 52 yrs old.

He is talking about buying a used semi tractor and driving solo with me as companion. Due to permanent injury I can not get my own CDL.

I know he wants us to be together but the process involved in ownership is scaring me because of our ages (I am 66).

Any thoughts on the matter.

Better love trucking

Have ten grand in the bank minimum.
Be willing to give your life to that seat until the truck is paid off minimum.

Is the money there? Sure once the truck is paid off....until it's paid off be prepared for normal company checks... Taxes taxes and more taxes. Save almost every penny till it's paid off....

Have a good accountant, mechanic healthcare coverage and a good business mind.

Be good times and hard times....

You never stated if he was going to get his own authority or sign on to a company.

If he has the will and drive to see it through AND YOU DO TO rewards are there.... Once the truck is paid off faster it's paid the better...

Former owner operator I quit simply because I was tired of living in a truck premium truck too, tv fridge microwave the works.... Went to home daily job...

But I am not he.... I had 3.5 years of company driving when I took the dive....

Just giving you the facts!

Becoming an Owner Operator Advise
by: Hervy

This page is about becoming an owner operator. Also you will see a link to a page about buying a new vs used truck.

Becoming an owner operator

His age is not that old for being a trucker. If you all have some money set aside for repairs I don't see why not.

Plus his age is not that old at all for being a driver and yours is not too old for being a rider with him, lol. (There are drivers your age too!)

He's been training too which forces you to think about trucking at a deeper level in order to prepare the student.

My hunch is you should go for it.
