Hey Jeff Thanks for your comments. I stand by my research and definitely by my own experiences. I tell anyone thinking about getting into long-haul trucking or what we in the trade call OTR, you had better think long and hard. It can be a rewarding career but depends in large part on the company. New guys like yourself should drive for one of the big companies - i.e., Schnieder, JB HUNT, Warner, Swift, Melton ex cetera - just to get your feet wet, and build up some experience. If you do not want to go the owner operator route and just remain a company driver, I suggest strongly after you get the requisite 2 years experience, you look for a much smaller regional carrier to work for, fleet directory www.fleetdirectory.com has an excellent list of these little known, specialty and regional carriers. One called me the other day offering $130K/annum if I wanted to run with them as a solo O/O. They do strictly entertainment; you have to have a bare minimum of ten years verifiable OTR, be flexibl; and able to enter Canada (some misdemeanors here are considered felonies in Canada, which bar entry. If Canadian authorities choose to pull you over, and you have a criminal record in the United States and no Canadian "Minister's Permit," which allows entry, they will briefly detain, run a FBI background check - they do have full access to the National Crime Information Center - and eventually turn you around.) They typically pay more, demand less, and have better equipment. Why would anyone in their right mind want to drive a fleet sled for Schneider in example who just turned down their trucks to 60 miles/hour. What that means for the driver is less break time. Because for every 15 minutes you stop, park, piss, and grab a coffee or soda is a hour lost on the road. I cannot advise you not to consider trucking, I just strongly you carefully weight your options. Best of luck. 10-4?

dude! by: Jeff
if you could get every driver in on a massive strike even for a day you would speak very loudly. If every trucker said "F THIS!!!" and went to the bar that would be awesome. Those corporate big cats would be scrambling trying to get the stuff done but what can they do? Their shipment is "en route" to the local bar LOL. It would probably get everyone fired tho but it's worth a shot tho at least.I'm not a trucker but I want to be one as in my other posts. After reading this post I'm not sure if I want to hassle with it. I have a great job at the wyndham resorts even tho it's only 8.50 an hour and its right near where I live, I get free food and free soda and coffee. The question is do I give up this life for a life on the road leaving my wife behind? I watch Ice road truckers religiously every sunday so I know it's not an easy job but I still feel like I could do it (Not being an ice road trucker but just a regular trucker in the lower 48). I read where you mention truckers basically only get minimum wage. Kind of makes it not worth it as I am pretty much doing that on my current job. If you have any advice for a guy just wanting to make a new life please hit me up Jeffro1277@yahoo.com

No its sheeple. by: Shepherd
I am afraid that it is not deregulation. It is the inability of the drivers to get together long enough to have a voice loud enough to be heard. Just like the rest of the sheeple in these United States. More regulation??, no more big government!,just a population and workforce that has been taught how to think rather than what to think.Individuals with the ability to think critically, and question all authority. Ones that know how to read, how to be accountable for their own situations and making change where they can be made. With self first. The federal Government needs to be reigned in, back to constitutional controls, I don't care if the leaders are white, black, red, brown yellow or a mix of them all, they need to lead by personal example as defined and determined by constitutional authority alone.
