You actually make it seem so easy along with your presentation however I in finding this matter to be really something that I think I might never understand. It kind of feels too complex and extremely extensive for me.

Security Gear NEW

Security Gear

Security Gear - Before making any purchases, check with your local government to confirm what is possible when it comes to arming your security team. In the United States, this is usually less of an issue than in other countries, but each locality has its own regulations. Established security companies will be up to date on their community’s laws and regulations and will save you the hassle and expenses of security gear purchases, maintenance and training.

Which company is the question?
by: Jimmy

Well, I'll mention some companies that are small-medium in size. No guarantees, OK.

You mentioned Western Express, out of Nashville,Tn. A van/flatbed operation. Recently bought out Smithway Motor Express out of Ft. Dodge, Ia. Mostly flatbed operation. I did work for SMX in 2000 and again in 2001. I liked them, this was before the owner died and his wife took over. Western Express is a fairly new carrier, maybe 15 years old. Check out TWT, out of Spokane, Wn, a sister company to System. Mostly west coast operation. Market Transport, out of Portland, Or, McKelvey Trucking out of Phoenix, Az, Tru-Line out of Las Vegas, Nv, John Christner Trucking out of Sapulpa, Ok, and Cox out of St. George,Ut.

A couple more are O&S, out of Springfield, Mo as well as Trail-Liner and IWX and CTI, (Indiana Western Ex and Central Trucking Inc) All of these are out of Springfield, Mo. Good luck....Jimmy

Re: How much money?

Which companies would you suggest I look into for training after I obtain my CDL through my local community college? I would be interested in smaller companies where you wouldn't be just another number. I've heard pretty good things about Western Express but I would like to research other companies.

Community College recommended.......
by: Jimmy

Community College is the way to go. See if you qualify for State funded assistance. A cohort of mine is currently attending school here in Kingman, operated by Sage out of Montana. Check this out, he was shown how to chain up an 18 wheeler in class, hands on. That's unheard of. Good luck. Jimmy

I agree that it's a shame to force driver's to move freight for peanuts! I wouldn't attempt to become an O/O especially in this economy. I am willing to spend months on the road at a time and just run. Seems like the majority of the conversations lean towards smaller companies. I do not have my CDL yet so how would suggest I proceed? Would it be more beneficial for me to obtain my license through a local college, or through company training? I used to work at a chemical plant so I'm hopeful I would do well on the hazmat endorsement....

Glenn from Denver.
by: Jimmy

How do there Glenn. Well, at .34 a mile times 10,000 miles per month, you get $3400 gross. Right? But, will you get .34 a mile? Maybe it will be .35 or .38 or .30. Maybe you'll do 8000 miles a month or 12000. Times, they are a changin'. Shippers and brokers are taking advantage of trucking companies and O/O's right now. They know freight is slow and trucks are sitting. So, they offer freight, but at low rates, knowing the trucks will take the bait just to move.

To me, that's a crying shame, because the trucking companies have all the clout, but no gumption to dictate the rate that they will run for. This includes O/O's. There is no organization out there. It's everyman for himself. A few will sit and wait for a higher rate, but most will run for peanuts, because they have bills to pay.

So that brings us to you. It's not the best time to enter this biz, but if you are flexable and adventuresome and can support yourself for awhile and hang in there, then go for it. Like the Jerry Butler song from the '50,s, "Only the strong survive". Oh, and there's no benefits nowadays. You can have a payroll deduct for health insurance, and some companies MAY pay holiday pay, but it will only be something like $75. Jimmy
