In the CFR it states "no loaded firearms" in the Haz-Mat section, chapter on Explosives. Now I'm not clear as to weather they mean "cargo" or drivers personal gear? I too have asked this question of weather we can carry (with permit) 0r not in a com. vehicle. Can't get a clear answer.
However, a fellow trucker I used to work with at another Co. has carried his 9mm in the truck for years and never had a problem. the trick he said is if you have a concealed carry permit remember just that "keep it concealed".

Sounds like you are very level headed. As you said, knowing the law and being trained to handle a weapon is very important. I would like to add this to the conversation. Before you ever need to use your weapon, try not to get yourself in a position where you would need to use your weapon.

Remember the old western movies where a gun slinger with a reputation would show up in town, not bothering anyone, and some fool would challenge him thinking he could fast draw him, but always lost. The gunslinger would just nick him on the wrist, and the challenger would scamper away, having learned a valuable lesson.

So, watch your surroundings, don't mix alcohol with guns, and just know that if you fire your weapon, you could get mistaken for the bad guy when the cops show up. You can only shoot to protect your life or someone elses, I think laws vary on protecting your property in different states. Jimmy

Gun Training

Jimmy, you hit the nail on the head. I too agree that there should be mandatory training for all gun owners. It is one thing to fire a weapon at a stationary target and another to fire one in self defense.

I started this thread just to get the feelings of other drivers. I do not believe that all drivers should pack a weapon. However I do feel that it should be a personal choice. If that choice is to carry a weapon, you should make sure that you should first have the proper safety training as well as having a good understanding of the law.

I am sure no one would want just anybody jumping behind the wheel of a truck without training and practice. That could be just as deadly...if not more so..

Richard, thanks for the comeback. I agree with you. Too many bad guys out there. I would like to see a regulation that requires any gun buyer to complete some basic training with regards to handling a gun.

In a self defense mode, in a perfect world, you could squeeze off one round right through the heart and be done with it. Sometimes, just the bad guy seeing your weapon is enough to make him turn tail and run. Hey, don't be a stranger. Jimmy

Carry Permits

Thanks for the comment Jimmy. You are correct in that some states are not citizen friendly when it comes to hand guns. Fortunately not all states are like this. Also, you are correct about innocent bystanders. If you use your weapon to defend yourself you are still responsible for any damage to other person and property. If you shot at a criminal because you feel like your life or another’s person’s life is in danger and your bullet hits someone else, you can be convicted of manslaughter. This is why the first 2 rounds in my handgun are less than lethal rounds (rubber bullets). My intent is to protect myself or others, not to kill unless it is not avoidable. Here is some information that some drivers might find useful. If you are a company driver, you might want to check your companies policy before packing a weapon in your truck. The following states have reciprocity agreements with the state of TN, which means that they have a written agreement with TN recognizing a TN issued permit.
Alaska,Arizona,Arkansas,Florida,Georgia,Kentucky,
Louisiana,Michigan,Mississippi,New Hampshire,
North Carolina,Ohio,Pennsylvania,South Carolina,
South Dakota,Texas,Virginia,West Virginia and
Wyoming.
There are other states that do not have an agreement with TN. However, they still recognize the TN permit. They are: Alabama,Colorado Delaware,Idaho,Indiana,Kansas,Minnesota,Missouri Montana,Nevada,New Mexico,North Dakota,Oklahoma Utah and Vermont. Then there are the "not so citizen friendly staes:California,Connecticut
Hawaii,Illinois,Iowa,Maine,Maryland,Massachusetts
Nebraska,New Jersey,New York,Oregon,Rhode Island
Washington and Wisconsin.

OK,some carry/concealed permits aren't valid in every jurisdiction. Federal law has no restrictions on carrying in a Commercial vehicle. N.Y. is very anti-citizen with gun. I use to carry a gun for many years in my truck inside my briefcase and when I got out of the truck, I carried the briefcase with me. (no permit) In Az, you can carry a loaded gun in plain site without a permit.

But, I would worry about defending myself and an innocent bystander catching a round while having a shootout in the parking lot. A .45 bullet can go through the sleeper and travel 300 ft without a problem. So, there's a lot to consider. Jimmy

I could be wrong, but I understand it is illegal to carry a gun in a commercial vehicle. Although I could see the reason someone would want one.
